Upgrading existing 400W Halide based High Bay lights with a custom designed LED Retrofit module
In an effort to reduce their environmental impact and to reduce operating costs, an Office Tower decided to upgrade their 400 Watt Halide primary lighting fixtures located within their Main floor atrium and 2nd floor concourse areas. Several local lighting firms provided options, but all required complete replacement of all 47 existing fixtures (3 different styles) including redesign/re-engineering of fixture mounts and aesthetic repairs to the affected areas. Complicating the project was that all the lights were located approx 10m (30 feet) above actively used building areas including escalators. S Squared's solution was a full custom LED retrofit assembly that could be used in all fixtures. Not only was this approach unique, but that it offered the following advantages:
- There were no changes, modifications, or repairs to the existing fixture mounting areas which reduced the project cost, but also minimized usage disruptions to these building areas.
- Single LED module was developed such that it could be used in all 4 fixture styles (Recessed, pendant, and two wall mount sizes) using specific fixture style mounting plates and outer trim rings.
- Minimal Environmental impact, as the majority of the original fixture components were reused and so less items had to be disposed of and/or recycled.
- A 96% reduction in energy use was realized resulting in a substantial reduction to the building's monthly energy costs.
- Design included a number of specialty control features including, wired and wireless mesh control, back-end integration into the building's BMS, and embedded RGBW architectural LEDs allowing the fixtures to be used for special event and seasonal lighting needs.
- The entire project cost was approximately half of the cost of existing off‐the‐shelf fixtures and was completed in under 7 days by 2 electricians and a scissor-lift
